8:15am

Astonishing! Now I realise the truth about the strange Alien obelisk and it’s unfathomable power. Captain Pax ordered the ship to break orbit. As you may recall, when we first entered this system, what should have been a 36 hour journey from the 8th Planet to the 6th Planet, took us 144 hours. The 8th planet was under the effect of a time dilation field of such strength as to actually slow down time!

We set course at 06:40 hours, and at 07:25 hours we were amazed to see we had already reached the 8th planet! I am now convinced that the strange beam of energy we activated from the moon base has literally altered the speed that time passes in this region of the system!

But it begs the question – why would someone create such a device? I am excited by this phenomena,  but equally I feel a sense of danger and will propose to the Captain that now we know what the device does, perhaps we should return after all.

9:34am

Something is very wrong… We are in orbit of the 8th Planet and the Darcy’s sensors are showing massive amounts of energy readings all over the planets surface.  When we first passed this planet some weeks ago, it was a lifeless rock. The sensor readings appear to be saying that this planet is industrialised and hence populated.  However, visually we do not see any signs of activity on the planets surface.

10:07am

I cannot believe how fast the time is passing. I left the room briefly to grab some coffee. I return to my station and noted that it took me 33 minutes.

10:14am

The Captain has called me to the bridge. We are being hailed by an Alien ship!

After weeks of intense study, the Alien weapon system is not going to yield its secrets to us. I decided that we could not learn anything more about the strange structure and the obelisk on the moon and we have set a course to leave this system. Berac is annoyed with the decision because he feels that this power is something very special and that if we could wield it and adapt it to our needs, then the benefits would be immense. I am inclined to agree with him, but after waiting 4 weeks for a long range transmission from the Batang Corp, the answer is no – we cannot stay and investigate further. They need results to prove to their investors that this mission is a wise investment, and we don’t have any.

After lengthy study of the alien console I have not been able to better determine what the console does. I decided to return to the moon to investigate further. I took a small team with me, Enrico Betoli and Susan Mitchell accompanied me.

Mitchell shared my feeling that the device was some kind of telemetry control system. She suggested that it was perhaps used for control of automatic mining vessels, but this was pure speculation.

I decided to systematically test each button on the console. After each press I moved the trackball 90 degrees, waited 1 minute for a result and then proceeded with the next. One button in particular we referred to as the “Return key” because it was slightly bigger than the others. So on the second trial, after each button press I would move the trackball and then press the Return key. Still nothing happened. On the third trial, not really knowing how else to approach the situation, I decided to press the buttons in reverse order starting with the 8th button (the Return key). I was pleasantly surprised when suddenly all 8 buttons appeared active with a bright blue glow!

I decided to press the 8th button again which in turn activated some kind of audio message. The message spoke in a deep alien voice: “Ook tek, ook nit – mofanta celgg” was my best translation. It repeated over and over and I surmised it was prompting me to act further. I rotated the trackball and with a sudden surge the entire base began to vibrate. Betoli ran outside to see what was happening and shouted over his com for us to come and see.

Outside we were amazed to see a long stone like beam had extended itself up through the surface of the moon, just a few meters from the base. After a few minutes it stopped extending and stood over 10 meters in length. Its surface was smooth and appeared to be made of the same stone that the base itself was made. However, on one face at its base was a single button that sat flashing. It was waiting to be pressed!

I was faced with the thought of Sergeant Gibson pressing the buttons randomly on our first mission to the moon base, and remembered how I had frowned upon his careless actions. I felt I should heed my own words, but as a Science Officer I also felt I was most qualified to press the button.

Taking a deep breath, I pressed it. With a sudden build up of power the tall alien obelisk shot a stream of blue/green energy from the tip out in to space! It was amazing to see – was it some kind of energy weapon? It had to be I thought. Mitchell and Betoli and I stared in amazement. It was a full 10 seconds at least and suddenly the beam shut down of its own accord. The radio crackled and it was Captain Pax requesting a report. They had witnessed the beam from the ship.

Radio Log Pax – Berac

  • · Pax: Berac, come in, over.
  • · Berac: Berac here captain. You witnessed that?
  • · Pax: We sure did. What was it?
  • · Berac: Uncertain captain, possibly some kind of alien beam weapon technology.
  • · Pax: A defense system perhaps?
  • · Berac: Yes, possibly a moon base defense for the planet.
  • · Pax: Interesting. Look forward to your full report, Pax out.
  • · Berac: Yes sir. Out.

Regarding Moon Base of 6th Planet.
The structure itself is fascinating. Composition of its material is unlike anything else found on the moon. We have gathered a dozen samples from random locations across its surface and I am convinced that it is not native to this moon. We further tested the moon with deep radar but it indicated its interior is devoid of structure and stratigraphy.

When we approached the entrance, we triggered an automatic response as the doorway opened of its own accord. I estimated the weight of the door itself to be around 2 metric tons, however, I could not understand what powered it or what mechanism was used to move it, only that EMF monitor peaked at 250,000 Gauss – luckily our suits are able to withstand this for short periods.

Inside the structure were 3 console/terminals that had not seen use for a very long time. I wiped the central terminal clean and surprisingly it appeared active, or in some kind of standby state. There is a row of 8 buttons and a strange ball like control, similar to that of a trackball used in the early computers of the 21st century. Unfortunately, Sargent Gibson carelessly pressed some of the buttons before I could stop him! What is it with the human desire to simply press buttons? A field of study in its own right I am sure. Fortunately his actions seemed to do nothing.

I studied the symbols on each of the buttons but the alien symbolism was impossible to decipher but my feeling is that they are some sort of telemetry device. Whatever the technology was controlling it does not appear to be here. The Captain has left it to me to decide whether we should further investigate the consoles. I am inclined to think that only trial and error will help us further understand what it is these consoles do. As such, I will be returning to the moon with a small team in the morning to further investigate.

After receiving the video feed of the moon base, we found what looks to be some kind of doorway on the west side. I decided to send an away team to investigate. Berac and 2 military personnel, Gibson and Aria went to check it out. First thing they did was to check the composition of the moon base material. Berac cracked of a small sample with his geologist tool for analysis. It appeared to be some kind of refined mineral but when he compared it to the moon rock, they were totally different. We think the material used to construct it was not from the moon itself, leading us to believe it must have been imported somehow. The planet that this moon orbits is lifeless and is largely molten so we don’t think they came from there.

As the team approached the doorway, they must have triggered some kind of sensor because the door opened of its own accord. Gibson took point and led them inside the structure. The doorway was nearly 4 meters tall. It was pitch black and they relied on their torches to light the way. Once inside they found a range of consoles – what appeared to be highly advanced tech. They were covered in dust and by the looks of it had been settling for possibly hundreds of years.

Berac’s report will reflect the tech details of the mission, but I wanted to note that one of the consoles was still active and was the source of the energy reading we had discovered. Berac is still unsure what it is doing, but I am confident he will figure it out. For now we remain in orbit.

08:50am
The most peculiar thing has happened. We are orbiting the moon where the structure is located, but our quantum clocks indicate that the time to reach it was nearly 144 hours. Berac says that as we passed the 8th planet, we were caught in a time dilation field. His team have analysed the data and he assures me that the distance and our velocity were definitely constant. None of us have felt like this took almost a week…

15:30pm
We have just launched a remote guided probe down to the moon’s surface. We have ascertained that there is some gravity, approximately 3.8m/s but very little atmosphere. As I write this report, Beracs team is moving the probe in to place to take video shots of the moon base. On the long distance shots, it appears quite rudimentary in design – an oval block with two small towers on each end. Sensors indicate that there is a low energy reading emitting from the structure. Depending on what the close up shots reveal, will depend on whether I decide to send down an away team.

We’ve been traveling for over a week without incident, but this morning we were pulled out of hyperspace by the auto-alert system. Seems like the Darcy has found something of interest. I’m still waiting for the full report but first indications are that it is a structure on a small moon orbiting the 6th planet of this current solar system. We’ve had to slow to impulse power and engage the trajectory thrusters because the gravity of the 8th planet is playing havoc with our navigation. Science Officer Berac says the planet has a very peculiar behavior. He tells me it is spinning at a phenomenal rate for its size and distance from its star. He estimates the planet is rotating at approximately 17 times a minute, and the gravity well caused by this is immensely strong. I am assured the ship is not in immediate danger and as we progress further into the solar system, the effects of the 8th planet will decrease.

According to Barrett, we should reach the 6th planet and its moon within 36 hours.

Sacrifice of the Kaber Part 2

After scooping up the black box, we maneuvered the V-Pod out through the largest hole in the front of the ship and guided it back to the docking bay. Jannings brought the pod aboard and we followed standard decontamination procedure. Given everything was exposed to the harsh environment of space, the decon’ was probably not necessary but we did it anyway. Several members of the crew had assembled in the docking bay to see what we had.

Crellor the Chief Medical Officer looked over the devices recovered from the Alien MED lab. An empty glass vial was housed inside the framework of what appeared to be some sort of alien syringe gun.

“I don’t see how this thing can work” she said. “Perhaps it’s missing some other component because I see no way to deliver its contents.”

“Maybe you need an Alien to tell you Doc?” replied Jannings.

“Perhaps we need one of those orange vials” she said smiling.

“You would love to get your hands on some Alien blood I’m sure Doc, but you know the rules. No -”

“No Alien biological samples allowed onboard – I know. But we could have brought back the skeleton. I’m sure it is perfectly safe.”

“You’re probably right, but if we break decon’ rules we could all end up space dust” Jannings answered holding up the black box, curious as to what it might be.

“What do you think it is?” asked Crellor.

“No idea – looks like some kind of hard disk. Oh wait – look here”. He turned the box over and had discovered a small flap on the underside, he pressed it lightly and it clicked and swung open. “Buttons!” he exclaimed. He fiddled with the device and suddenly it began to emit a low humming noise. Fearing he had accidentally triggered some kind of bomb he ordered everyone back and began to move towards a mini-lock (a mini air lock for flushing waste in to space) but before he could get there, the device sprang to life with a 3D holographic recording. There sat the Alien in its small chair talking in its strange Alien tongue. Its skin was jet black and its eyes were pale orange with brilliant white pupils. It didn’t blink and it appeared to have no nostrils or mouth. The head was squat looking, like something heavy had pushed down on it and forced the head into the neck. Around the part where the neck would be, was what looked like some sort of breathing apparatus and they guessed was where its voice was coming from. It had long arms, short legs and was quite portly in appearance.

The crew watched bewildered by what they saw in front of them. The view began to pan around and they figured that the Alien device was relaying the scene. They saw that the ship was still intact and that the crew were at their stations, and outside the bridge window there appeared to be a second ship very much like the one they had discovered, only it was longer and seemed to be more like a cargo vessel. A red warning light flashed on the top of the second ship, showing that it was possibly in distress.

The scene changed again, and this time it showed the second ship hovering over a large asteroid. From the belly of the ship a large, extended, crane like arm was embedded into the asteroid and a steady orange pulse ran up the arm as though it were mining for something.

Again the scene changed. This time it showed the second ship accelerating away from the asteroid, which at that instance exploded in a blaze of white light. Debris was hurled in all directions and the second ship rocked from the shock wave as it hastened away. The view flicked again back to the first ship and we could see the second ship approaching at high velocity. It appeared we had been shown what had previously happened to the second ship.

The first ship began quickly to manoeuvre around to cover the aft of the second ship and there it stopped and began emitting an energy shield around itself as though it were protecting the other. The view changed again back to the Alien in the chair and he uttered something in his alien language.

“Conchen utenna mak drof!” he paused and then cried out.

“KABER!”

The crew looked at each other surprised and wondering what it could mean. Alien languages were never easy, but at least they could actually understand the sound, and so they agreed to name the ship the Kaber.

The Aliens face then seemed to take on a look of sadness, and the scene changed again to show each member of the Alien crew disappearing in to what must have been a transporter beam. One by one it went through different parts of the ship as though it were making sure they were all successfully transported away. Then they saw the medical bay, where they recognised the strange orange vials and the medical equipment. Right before the transporter beam removed the Alien in the viewer, they saw it holding the syringe gun to its neck piece and injecting a vial of the liquid. It appeared that the Alien pressed nothing, and the device just seemed to work upon contact with the breathing apparatus..

“Must be something especially for that device on its neck – guess we will never know” said Crellor.

“So it looks as though they had to evacuate, perhaps to that other ship – but why?” asked Jannings.

Then he had his answer. The recording became a bit unstable, but they could still make out clearly enough that holes were forming all over the ship. It appeared that the debris from the asteroid had reached them and was bombarding the ship. Equipment aboard the ship began to fly out into space, and the console lights of the controls began to grow dim. The final view on the recording was of what they now guessed to be, the captain of this ship, showing the Alien firmly rolled into a ball. Surrounding its chair was a force field that held it in place whilst the vacuum of space pulled out everything that was not part of the ship. When the vacuum had claimed the ships atmosphere and there was nothing left to suck out, the shield slowly failed and the Alien just sat there motionless, seemingly dead from the sudden exposure of space. The viewer flickered a few more times and then faded out.

Engineer Farhoe was almost killed today by a micro meteorite. I feel it is my duty to report some details. Farhoe is a hard working individual but I am starting to feel that he lacks what I would call, an ability to predict potential danger scenarios, no matter how small they might be. A few weeks ago, I ordered him to lock down a minor coolant leak in one of the DRA tanks. He fixed the leak but he failed to inspect the other tanks to see if the problem was a one off. When I asked for his report on the other tanks, he admitted that he had not checked them. This might seem trivial but in the daily runnings of the ship, everything needs to be checked thoroughly. I gave him the benefit of the doubt as he assured me he would pay more attention in future.

However, now that he has potentially endangered the ship and not to mention himself, I have no alternative but to restrict his access to general engineering duties. He understands, but he did not seem happy about it when I told him. I will keep an eye on his progress and with a little work I think we can bring him up to the level he needs to be in order to resume more advanced duties that he is capable of.

Today saw the near loss of crew member Farhoe – he is a secondary engineer with little training. He was assigned to the sensor array upgrades as a support engineer. During his second space walk, he was charged with monitoring for micro meteorites whilst the primary engineers worked. Farhoe was hit by a micro meteorite in the upper body, it passed clean through his suit and the top of his shoulder, barely missing his lung. Engineer Clements says that Farhoe misread the data for ionized particles (apparently an easy mistake to make). However, I have had to restrict Farhoe from further external missions until such time he can prove he is capable.

The good news is that the sensor upgrades have been finished and Rollenka assures me we will have shields again in a few hours. At that point we will head deeper in to M83 and resume our mission.
